AIG launches road safety education programme to keep Singapore children safe

SINGAPORE, 2 February 2015 - AIG Asia Pacific Insurance Pte. Ltd. (AIG) has launched a road safety education programme to help keep children in Singapore safe. In 2015, the insurance company is planning to teach the importance of road safety to over 2,000 children aged between four and six across Singapore.

Launched today at My Little Gems Preschool, the children learnt about road traffic rules, how to identify and interpret street signs, and even had the opportunity to drive mini-electric cars around a road track.
Chief Executive of AIG Asia Pacific Insurance, Mr Matt Harris said figures from the Singapore Police Force show that 43 pedestrians died on Singapore roads in 2013. This number accounted for 27 per cent of total road fatalities.

“This statistic is far too high. We believe that it is through education that we can make a positive change to this alarming number.

“We’ve been operating in Singapore for over 70 years and we’re committed to creating a safer road environment not only for our 150,000 car insurance customers, but for the community as a whole,” said Mr Harris.

Mr Ben Lim, Director of My Little Gems Preschool, said that it was an enriching experience for the children to put into practice their understanding of road safety in such an engaging and fun way.
“The road safety education programme launched by AIG is aligned with the philosophy of My Little Gems Preschool, where children learn through inquiry-based activities as well as develop their awareness through mindfulness exercises,” he said.

“With the use of the mini road tracks, the children demonstrated their awareness of road traffic rules and safety precautions, and exercised mindfulness of their environment when they were crossing the road. These are life skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives,” said Mr Lim.

Today’s launch builds on other road safety education initiatives that AIG has supported in recent years to create safer roads. These include the DriveSafe Challenge – a one day event that saw over 100 cars travel around the island of Singapore with participants engaging in various road safety activities.
